“Beliefs” is a big word and can mean a lot of different things. There can be belief in your higher power, belief in yourself, or the belief in the goodness of people when you see them practice caring and compassion. You might consider those positive, onward-leading beliefs that support and nourish us. In this session we’re going to work with what are called limiting beliefs, or negative core beliefs. Beliefs that we hold deeply but get in the way of living our fullest lives. These may be beliefs about how the outside world and the people in it “should” be. But more often they are beliefs about ourselves. And they tend to be so deeply held we don’t see them—we just experience the consequences of believing them.
This workshop will review various aspects of beliefs including how they arise and how our human minds tend to perpetuate them, even when we can see they are unhelpful. We’ll then use the RAIN practice to look for and work with limiting beliefs. If you are not familiar with it, RAIN stands for Recognize, Allow, Investigate and Nurture. It is a skillful way to work with emotions, and since many emotions are driven by underlying beliefs, we can uncover those beliefs as we practice learning from difficult emotions (rather than just trying to avoid them!). We’ll then explore The Work by Byron Katie, which offers a unique approach for enlarging our perspective around negative beliefs in a way that begins to free us from them.
The goal of this session is to provide you with lots of tools to bring unhelpful beliefs out into consciousness and then be able to work with them in a way that gives you more choice around how you are affected by them. Previous experience with mindfulness and meditation is helpful, but not required. After the session I’ll provide a Dropbox link that you can access going forward with recordings and handouts that go over what we cover. You can view the waiver and register here or use the button below.
This session is offered freely to make it as accessible as possible. If you find it valuable, please consider making a donation either to Imagine Mindfulness, a non-profit working to make mindfulness courses accessible to people around the world, or to the non-profit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, a great place to relearn how to be kind to yourself.
Please note that at times my life is unpredictable, so I may need to change the date and I’ll keep you informed if that happens. I appreciate your forbearance around that. If you have any questions about the session, feel free to use the Contact page to reach me or email me directly at modestlymindful@gmail.com.
Thank you for your interest in this!
