Workshop on Mindfulness of Death and Dying

I will be offering this free 90-minute workshop on Tuesday, June 9 at noon Eastern US (time zone converter here). This will be a small experimental workshop. For more info, read on!

[Please note that because of my unpredictable schedule I may need to change the date. Thank you for understanding.]

The psychologist Dr. Todd Pressman, author of the book Deconstructing Anxiety, posits that the fear of death can underly many of our daily anxieties, even if we don’t realize it. There are various meditative practices designed to help us come to terms with the inevitability of death and dying, and at one point I created a cycle of practices along with a handout so people could explore this on their own.

This workshop is an experiment to see if there is interest in getting together and doing some of these practices, and to get a sense of how valuable people find them. I plan on offering a brief review of this topic, and then doing two to three practices with time to share our experiences between them. I am going to limit enrollment to about 40 people so the Zoom room isn’t too big. If people find this useful, I may continue doing sessions like this.

Although my classes are open to all, it is best if you already have an ongoing meditation practice so you are familiar with the basics. Also, as with any meditation class, listen to your inner guide about whether it is the right time for you to try this. Doing a workshop on this particular topic when you are dealing with really difficult things in life can be unhelpful. You may end up simply recycling being overwhelmed, and you can’t learn when in overwhelm. You know best what is right for you.

This session is freely offered to make it accessible, but if you find it of value and are able to make a donation, I would ask that you consider donating to the good folks at Imagine Mindfulness, a non-profit working to make practices like this accessible to all, or to the equally good folks at the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. Or anything else you feel is worthy---there is so much need out there.

To sign up you need to review the waiver and register at this form, or you can use the button below. Let me know if you have any questions—modestlymindful@gmail.com—and thank you for your interest in this!
