Comparing.

A great quote from the teacher Sam Harris:

“Notice your tendency to compare yourself to other people. This is a habit that is born of a solidified notion of self. And it is a reliable way to make yourself unhappy. Even when you feel superior to another person, how good does that really feel? And what sort of relationships do you imagine you will cultivate on that basis? When you become mindful of this habit, and of its consequences, you can cease to practice it.”

I guess if you are a famous teacher, you can tell people to “cease to practice it.” Which is a noble aspiration, but kind of hard to do. So give yourself credit if you simply manage to notice that comparing mind in action. Just seeing it is huge, even if you can’t immediately turn it off…
